About This Work

‘Toni from Barceloni’ A playful twist with the name of Toni’s home town which he could not come to terms with instead, he politely ignored my use of the ‘I’ instead of an ‘a’ and only once he said firmly Barcelona and then he gave up. Toni is a total gentleman. He is very polite, never offensive, the perfect model in fact. I did get a little carried away with his skin texture and loved every minute of it. He simply shrugged his shoulders, smiled and looked in the other direction momentarily, shook his head and then looked back at me, inverted his eyes and blinked before looking at the ground. That said it all. For the first time in years I went back to using chalk pastel. This time however the surface I was using was quite different to the paper I normally use. This paper was like somewhere between a coarse and a fine sandpaper, Clairefontaine Pastel Mat paper 300gsm. After the first layer it almost felt like I was working with oil pastel again. I really enjoyed the effects it was giving me. Another advantage of this surface was that it was self fixing and that is a very attractive proposition for any pastel artist, particularly as a number of artists already who choose not to use fixative at all because of the additional exposure to chemistry and the cumulative effect of this exposure on their health.
